It was one-two for Mercedes Benz drivers Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas at the Spanish Grand Prix as Hamilton secured his second victory in a row. Red Bull racing driver Max Verstappen came in third with his damaged car, edging out Sebastian Vettel of Ferrari who had to be content with the fourth position.
It was pole-sitter Hamilton who controlled the proceedings from the start, though the race in its initial rounds saw three drivers crashing out. At Turn 3, Romain Grosjean of Haas spun his car knocking off in the bargain Renault’s Nico Hulkenberg and Toro Rosso’s Pierre Gasly.
Hamilton managed to stay clear of all mishaps as he finished 20s ahead of his teammate Bottas to lead the first Mercedes one-two of the season. Vettel’s Red Bull mate Daniel Ricciardo came home fifth, while Kevin Magnussen managed an impressive 6th for his team Haas.
Local heroes Carlos Sainz of Renault came in seventh, ahead of eighth-placed Fernando Alonso in the McLaren securing vital points for their respective teams. Force India’s Sergio Perez managed a 9th, while finished No. 10 was Sauber’s Charles Leclerc.
Hamilton’s victory means he now leads Vettel by 17 points in the drivers’ standings, having leapfrogged his rival after Azerbaijan, with Bottas 20 behind the Ferrari man in third. A one-two was the perfect result for Mercedes, who dominated every session here in Barcelona – and they are now ahead of Ferrari in the constructors’ championship.
