Topi Heikkinen has won the Belgium round of the FIA World Rallycross Championship as the Finn did last season for Marklund Motorsport. Reigning WRX Champion Petter Solberg finished second for SDRX while the young Latvian Reinis Nitiss claimed 3rd Ford Olsberg MSE.
Semi Final 1 saw Kristoffersson, who was a favourite to win the round after mutilating Solberg’s time in Heat 4, to retire after clipping a kerb too close and puncturing his left front tyre, Timmy Hansen faced the same problem and lost out as well from qualifying to the RX Supercar Final. Heikkinen, Bakkerud and Nitiss took the top 3 spots to qualify to the final heat.

Semi Final 2 is where Solberg destroyed his chance of victory when the Norwegian jumped the start and was penalised with an extra joker lap. But Solberg being Solberg took it as a challenge and went all out. Despite the extra joker lap Solberg showed what a true champion can do when he finished 2nd under a second behind PG Andersson who took the Semi Final win. Solberg squeezed himself into the Final on the 2nd row with Bakkerud while Mattias Ekstrom finished 3rd in the Semi Final to line up alongside Nitiss in the Final.
The RX Supercar Final saw a determined Solberg right behind Andersson and Heikkinen into the first corner. Ekstrom was forced to retire once he incurred damage to his Audi S1 EKS Quattro on lap 1. PG Andersson couldn’t keep up the pace with Heikkinen and Solberg and fell behind to finish 4th ahead of Bakkerud. Solberg was close enough for victory up until the reigning champion messed up his joker lap by carrying too much speed into the corner and thus running wide. On the subsequent lap Heikkinen executed the perfect joker to extend his lead from Solberg to cross the finish line to take victory at Mettet, Belgium RX claiming it “My City”. Nitiss finished 3rd overall behind Solberg for Ford Olsberg MSE.

“I’m really happy, Belgium is starting to feel like home!,” grinned Heikkinen who repeated his 2014 Mettet victory. The Finn was awarded the coveted Monster Energy Super Charge Award after his rapid start off the line during the final, and also wins a Rebellion Timepieces Wraith Drive Rallycross watch from the Championship’s official timing partner.
