Sébastien Ogier and Julien Ingrassia were crowned World Rally Champions of 2014 defending their title victory from last year in their Volkswagen Polo R WRC cars, while breaking WRC records along the way.
With the final round of the WRC in the UK still to be held in November, Ogier/Ingrassia have claimed the drivers title for the second time with their 7th victory of the 2014 season (23rd victory of the duo’s career) in Spain. Their victory broke the record for Volkswagen as the team won 11 races in a single season. The French duo cannot be caught by their trailing team-mates, the Finnish Duo of Jari-Matti Latvala/Miikka Anttila who finished second in Spain with a 31 point gap between the two and 28 points up for grabs in UK. The French and Finnish Duos were also able to clinch the 10th One-Two victory for Volkswagen in WRC as well. The third VW car of Andreas Mikkelsen/Ola Fløene secured seventh place in Spain, thus cementing their third place spot in the driver’s championship.
The title remained undecided but nail bitingly close until the very end of the Spanish Rally. Going into the rally, if Ogeir finished before Latvala, the title would have been decided, if it was the other way round, the battle would have been stretched to the final round of Rally of UK.
Looking at the history books will reveal that Ogier and Ingrassia’s are the only fourth duo to successfully defend their title in 1977. They are also the eighth duo to be crowned double world champions as well.
With both titles decided and clinched by Volkswagen Motorsport, the Drivers’ Championship standing looks like this: 1st Sébastien Ogier, 242 pts; 2nd Jari-Matti Latvala, 211; 3rd Andreas Mikkelsen, 150; 4th Mikko Hirvonen, 108 and 5th Mads Østberg, 92.
As the teams head to Wales for the Grand Finale, the Constructors Championship standing are as follows: 1st Volkswagen Motorsport; 416 pts; 2nd Citroën Total Abu Dhabi WRT, 187; 3rd Ford M-Sport, 180; 4th Hyundai Motorsport, 175 and 5th Volkswagen Motorsport II, 133.
