Timmy Hansen
won his first race at the World Rallycross Championship in Italy for Peugeot
Hansen team as Richard Göransson
finished in second place in his WRX supercar debut with Ford Olsberg MSE while
Petter Solberg becomes the first ever World Rallycross Champion finishing third
in round 10 at Franciacorta International Circuit in Italy.
Winning his first race, Timmy Hansen also took the Monster Energy
Supercharge Award for winning two heats, his semifinal and the all important
final in the Supercar category.
After being the only driver to win more than one round of the
WRX championship of 2014, Petter Solberg won the Championship with 235 points
and a lead of 60 points over Toomas ‘Topi’ Heikkinen. With only 60 points up
for grabs and only 2 more rounds remaining, Solberg was crowned champion in
Italy. The victory did not come swift and easy for Solberg or his PSRX team
after cracking his engine block a few days earlier; the PSRX team was on a race
against the clock to fit Solberg’s car with a new engine for the next day as
they worked through the night. The PSRX teams hard work put Petter Solberg in
the record books becoming the first ever Word Rallycross Champion.
Multiple Swedish Touring Car Champion Richard Göransson
joined Hansen and Solberg on the podium finishing second for team Ford Olsberg
MSE in his WRX Supercar debut graduating from RX Lites this weekend.
Topi Heikkinen, the driver who showed promise throughout the
season, couldn’t make it to the final after a 5th place finish in
his semifinal which ruined his chances at the championship. the same fate was
met by Reinis Nitiss, the 18 year old Latvian’s championship chances were
shattered as he could only manage 6th overall after being knocked
out in the his semifinal.
ItalyRX also marked the final round of the FIA European Rally
Cross championship, which was won by Robin Larsson after finishing seventh in the
Intermediate Classification stage. Monster Energy World RX Team driver Henning
Solberg finished runner-up in Euro RX after reaching today’s semi-finals while
EKS RX driver Pontus Tidemand was awarded third.
With the teams championship still undecided, the party now
heads to Istanbul, Turkey for round 11 of the WRX Championship on October 11
and 12.
