It was a ‘Thar Fest’ and the participants were simply ‘RocksThars’. All one could see were Mahindra Thar SUVs and their spirited drivers at the 'Thar Fest' and 'Club Challenge' organised by Mahindra Adventure in Goa.
The Thar Fest was more of an occasion for Mahindra Thar owners to take their vehicles through slush, pits and water holes, towing logs and navigating through some tricky off road terrain and and also driving their vehicles in the Thar Parade. A few popular off road clubs from across the country were in Goa to participate in the Mahindra Adventure 'Club Challenge'. These clubs had to compete in some tricky obstacle courses designed around the natural landscape of Miramar, Goa.
Thar owners and participants also got to compete in the 'Strong Thar Contest' and 'Deep Trench Challenge' events. Awards were also given to participants for 'Best Modified Thar'. The 'Club Challenge' however was a different ballgame altogether. It tested the competitors for skill, strength, wit and courage. Club members were required to cover a set of different stages which required complete coordination and team work. Each team had three vehicle entries -- stock, modified and pro-modified.
It all began with the night stages where the first team event called 'Pass the Baton' saw all three Thars coordinating and pulling a bundle of logs tied down with chains. The stage required them to navigate through rutted trenches, slush pits and then navigating up a steep gradient with sharp corners. 'Pass the Baton' stage was won by the Gerrari Off-Roaders team. The second night stage was called 'Trench Trouble' it required the participants to navigate their vehicle into a deep trench where the team had to unbolt all four wheels, put their vehicle on stands and carry the wheels up the trench in four different directions. Their team mates were then required to re-bolt the wheels and recover themselves from the Trench. The second night stage was also won by the Gerrari Off-Roaders team.
Day 2 of the Club Challenge saw competitors engaging in a rather off beat challenge called 'Goalll'. The idea was to score a goal with their Thars using just the bumpers and tyres of the vehicle in the least possible time. This challenge was won by team BODA. The next two stages were much more complicated and really put the teams to test. The fourth obstacle was 'Trench Trouble 2', where competitors had to navigate down a steep gradient, then out of it and again back into the pit. The objective was to collect flags which had strategically been placed throughout the trench. V5 Off-Roaders from Coorg won this challenge.
The last and final obstacle to complete was the 'Bus Stop' challenge where in one vehicle from the team had to climb over an SUV, then a water tanker, a bus and finally climb down over a few SUVs and cars. All competitors were making use of their winches in this stage which proved to be the most efficient way of completing the challenge. Gerrari Off-Roaders and V5 Off-Roaders tied for first in this stage, while the V5 Off-Roaders team was crowned overall champions of the Mahindra Adventure 'Club Challenge'. Gerrari Off-Roaders won the 1st runner up title and Team Flywheel from Kerala won the 2nd runner up title. Both man and machine were thoroughly tested during the 'Club Challenge' as the spirit of camaraderie brought out the best in them.
