Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ launched in India

It was a grand event as Samsung launched the Samsung Galaxy S8 & S8+ smartphones in the capital. The S8 and S8+ have been priced at Rs 57,900 and 64,900 respectively. These prices are a bit more than what the devices are being sold at worldwide but we feel that the price is still a lot better and just. The device will be available for purchase on May 5 onwards and if you pre-book the device now, you get a free wireless charging pad that supports fast charging. The smartphone is also launching with the Jio double data offer giving users 28GB+28GB data for Rs 309. The S8+ will be available in Coral Blue, Midnight Black and Maple Gold colours and then S8 will be available in only Midnight Black and Maple Gold.

Both devices get the beautiful Infinity display that allows for an immersive experience with its dual edge and minimum bezel design. This makes both the devices relatively easy to use when compared to smartphones with similar display sizes. The S8 for example gets a 5.8inch display yet handles better than an average 5.5 inch screen smartphone. The Galaxy S8+ on the other hand gets a 6.2 inch display and both get Corning Gorilla Glass 5 and IP68 dust and water resistance. Both displays have a QHD+ resolution and HDR support. The camera setup is identical in both the devices and consists of a 12MP dual pixel rear facing camera with f/1.7 aperture and an 8MP front facing camera with an f/1.7 aperture. Battery backup stands at 3,000mAh for the S8 and 3,500 for the S8+. This is a bit below par but Samsung claims that their new SoC has the world's first 10nm processor which consumes less power. We can only confirm that once we get our hands on the device for review. Speaking of the processor, both devices are running on the Exynos 8895 64-bit octa-core processor (2.35GHz quad core + 1.9GHz quad core).

The version that is being sold in India gets a hybrid SIM tray that can either house two SIMs or a SIM and a microSD card of up to 256GB at a time. The internal  storage for both devices stands at 64GB and there is a 4GB LPDDR4 RAM on-board as well. Audiophiles would be delighted to know that the S8 devices come with AKG headphones bundled in the box.

The Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ are the first Samsung smartphones to get Bixby, Samsung's virtual assistant that is said to have contextual learning. The devices also get DeX which lets you connect your smartphone to your TV or PC monitor and on connecting a keyboard and a mouse you can use your phone just like a PC.
