Koenigsegg is
on a roll, first they destroyed the world record for the quickest car from
0-300-0kmph with a time of less than 18 seconds now they went on a journey to
conquer the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps.
Again at the
hands of Koenigsegg’s test driver Robert Serwanski, the One:1 just set a time
of 2 min: 32.14 sec, a record for any road legal production car on the track in
Belgium. The previous lap record was set by the same car of 2 min: 33.26 sec.
earlier and Serwanski bettered that time again. To give you a benchmark on how
quick the lap was, the fastest lap time set on the track for a non-Koenigsegg
car is 2 min: 38 sec, now that is a 6 full seconds quicker and Koenigsegg say
that they can do even better.
When they
arrived at the track on day 1, they realised that the car was over the 103dB
noise limit of the track and that posed a threat to the team. They worked
throughout the night on the exhaust to dampen the sound to be legal and went
for the hot lap on day 2.
When Serwanski
went out for some practice laps, all was good but as soon has he pinned the
throttle, the noise alarm went off and was flagged back into the pits by the
marshals. Having reworked on the car, they went back on track for the hot lap.
Despite
breaking the record Koenigsegg say “This lap was not intended to be anywhere
near our fastest lap as it was recorded during practice. Recording a lap time
in the low 2:32’s on old tires and with traffic on the track is no small feat.
It was something positive for us to take from the days we spent at the track.
Our previous record was a significant achievement and this one should be
recognized as such, too.
It pays to
remember that the previous non-Koenigsegg lap record for a production car at
Spa was a full six seconds slower than what you’re about to see right now. It
was done on the same tyres the car was wearing when we were at Spa over a month
ago. Robert slightly overshot the corners at Les Combes and the turn 18/19
combination into the final straight (after adjusting for some traffic on the
approach). So there’s plenty of improvement left in this car at this track.”
They
concluded to say “This new record is a small positive, but we can do better.”
