News comes from Rome/Sant’Agata Bolognese that Lamborghini has decided to put their highly anticipated Urus SUV concept which was first showcased 3 years ago at the Beijing Auto Show, into production.
Lamborghini had stated earlier that the Urus Super SUV will feature a 5.2 litre turbocharged V10 engine from Audi with an electric motor with a plug-in capability producing 584bhp.
It wouldn’t be the first time Lamborghini has made an SUV. With roots from making globally successful tractors, from 1986 – 1993, Lamborghini were also producing the LM002. Over the course of 7 years only 328 of the SUVs where ever produced. The LM002 was 5.2 litre V12 or a 7.2 litre marine V12 mated to a 5 speed manual gear box.
After news that Aston Martin, Rolls Royce and Bentley, confirmed that they were going to produce SUVs and also have started investing in R&D, while Maserati, and many more have been hinting at the same, it was inevitable that Lamborghini was going to join the club. And with pictures of Rolls Royce and Bentley already floating around the internet of their development status, and Aston Martin announcing its investment for the plug-in electric DBX crossover, Lamborghini just had to raise their hand and make a move.
Lamborghini has said that they have invested hundreds of millions of Euros into the project and the SUV will be in production by 2018. The Urus will be produced in Sant’Agata Bolognese and they claim that it will determine a substantial increase in capacity of production for the company. The company is investing heavily on expansion. The existing facility will see the current 80,000m2 area to increase up to 150,000m2. Theproject will also include the construction of a new production line, warehousing and enlargement of the R&D department while employing 500 new people as workforce.
