Volvo Cars has
big plans for India and Motown India is privy to some interesting facts about
their future global plans and their plan for the Indian market. After almost
selling twice the number of cars they sold last year Volvo Auto India is
ambitious and has big plans for India in particular. We take a look at five things you need to know about Volvo Auto India.
1 Polestar
Let’s start
with the most interesting one of them all, Volvo’s performance division
Polestar. We are sorry to report that Volvo has no plans whatsoever at the
moment to bring polestar cars to India. But here is a something that will help
you tackle that disappointment. Volvo customers can now download the Polestar
software into their cars that will increase the power of the engine by 20bhp.
Along with the added power your car gets certified with the extra power and a
light blue polestar badge at the back of your car. It isn’t much, but it’s
something.
2 Two litre 400bhp engine
Back in
October 2014, Volvo revealed their concept Drive-E powertrain. The engine is a
tiny humble little 2 litre twin turbo charged engine that will produce 400+bhp.
When this engine hits the roads, this will be the most powerful 2 litre
production engine in the world. But back then, the engine was only a concept
now Volvo has already put it into production and deliveries for the new XC90
hybrid with this monster of an engine will start globally from September –
October.
Here is some
good news for folks living in India. Firstly, the engine will give 37kmpl of
fuel economy, and secondly, the engine will come to India sometime mid-2016.
To sum up, this
is a 2 litre twin turbo engine, producing over 400bhp while saving the planet
with its 37kmpl fuel economy figures. In the word of Tomas Ernberg, Managing
Director, Volvo Auto India “Our new engine makes V8s look like dinosaurs”.
3 All new S80 coming soon
Now that the
XC90 has been launched, the S80 is next in line for an update because it is the
oldest car now in the Volvo line up. Just like the XC90, the S80 will also get
completely revolutionised. Starting this year itself, Volvo will be releasing
some teasers for the S80 soon. No other details have been revealed but Ernberg
said "it’s going to be even sexier than the XC90". This suggests that
the new S80 has already completed its development. Referring to Volvo’s
statement, that “in four years time, the XC90 will be the oldest car in the
Volvo line up” which hints that a storm is coming from Sweden.
4 S60 to get new T6 engine in June
In the month
of June 2015, Volvo will be launching the S60 with an all-new T6 petrol engine
producing 275bhp. The S60 has the D4 and D5 diesel engine in India all this
long with 5 cylinder engines. The R-Design was a refreshing 4 cylinder engine
which helped Volvo to increase their sales figures. The new T6 will only be the
icing on the cake. Volvo also plans to introduce a hybrid version of every
model they make available globally.
5 Network and aftersales
With a whiff of
happiness from increasing sales, moving forward Volvo is planning to expand its
dealer and workshop network in India to
sell more units. Volvo is planning to work on building the brand and
introducing new programmes for customer service, Volvo’s ambition is to be
known worldwide as the best can manufacturer that can provide the best
aftermarket solutions.
