Koenigsegg has just showcased their new model, the Koenigsegg Regera, at the 85th Geneva Motor Show. The Regera is the first hybrid car from the Swedish independent hyper car manufacturer and it is the first car with no transmission at all.
After the unveil of the One:1 from Koenigsegg last year, the first mega car in the world, we all thought no one will ever be able to come remotely close to it let alone go beyond. But as Christian Von Koenigsegg said “Only a Koenigsegg can beat a Koenigsegg” and it has now with the Koenigsegg Regera. Within a year Koenigsegg has sold all 10 of One:1’s and before any competitor could start to develop something to match it, Koenigsegg takes the bar further with the Regera.
The Regera has a 5.0 litre DOHC twin turbo V8 engine and a Direct Drive system that allows the engine to be mated directly to the differential and leaving the transmission out all together. The hybrid system in the Regera has batteries that are connected to an electric motor which adds power to the crankshaft directly with 214bhp. The internal combustion V8 engine or ICE, itself produces 1099bhp and another 480bhp with other forms of tecno-crazy power generators from the final drive system.
In a nutshell, the Regera has a total of 1500bhp or 1.11MW, 2150Nm of torque and with a brimmed up fluids and fuel tank weighs only 1628kgs which Koenigsegg has been able to achieve by leaving out the transmission. With the help of electricity generated from the mere 88kg worth batteries (can be charged by the ICE or by plugging in) of the electric motor alone, generates 700bhp on its own, 300bhp more than any other electric motor used by any rival manufacturer in the world while producing 900Nm of torque. The combination of the two motors the ICE and the electric motor helps the Koenigsegg go from 150-250kmph in 3.2seconds and in 20 seconds from 0-400kmpg yes 400!
We don’t see anyone matching that anytime soon. But how will Koenigsegg top the Regera in Geneva next time around? Who knows?
