BMW’s 1 series hasn’t made an impact in India at all unfortunately, but around the world the company has been able to sell nearly two million of the baby beamer in the last ten years. But now there is a new one.
BMW has updated their little baby making it more efficient with their EfficentDynamics technologies fitted as standard. Though it’s the global launch of the 1 series and it is only available in the UK for now, we Indians still have to wait for it to make it to India.
The 1 series will be powered by 3 petrol engines, 1.8L, 2.0L and a 2.5L and 4 diesel engines: a 1.6L, 1.8L, 2.0L and a 2.5L. All variably produce around 126 to 224bhp and 220 to 450Nm of torque from petrol to diesel. A 120d is also available with BMW’s xDrive all wheel drive system as well and in case that isn’t enough, an M135i variant with a turbo charged straight-six 3.5L petrol engine is also available from BMW’s ‘M’ division which does 0-100 in 4.9 seconds, producing 326bhp and 450Nm of torque. A majority of these variants are available with a 6-speed manual transmission or an improved eight-speed Steptronic Transmission. For India, its most likely to be only the Automatic transmission to arrive. But among the engines, we fully expect the entry level petrol and diesel engines for India. wheather the M135 will ever see the light of day in India, remains to be seen.
Just like all the latest BMW’s with ConnectedDrive, iDrive, LED lighting at the front and back, an updated version of the Parking Assistant features 12 rather than the previous 10 sensors and helps the driver to select and use parking spaces lying not only parallel but now also transversely to the road. In addition, the range of features has also been extended for Park Distance Control (PDC), and there’s the option of Active Cruise Control system with Stop & Go function.
The selection of driver assistance systems available for the new?BMW 1 Series also includes a rear-view camera, High Beam Assistant, Speed Limit Info including No Passing Info display and the Driving Assistant. The latter comprises the camera-based Lane Departure Warning and Collision Warning systems as well as the Attention Assistant feature.
The new BMW 1 Series goes on sale in the UK from March 28, 2015. For India, just like every other manufacturers philosophy goes, the 5 door variant with the automatic transmissions will be available probably by the 2nd half of 2015, but we are just guessing.
