The iconic Shelby GT350 Mustang returns as Ford has finally revealed the American Muscle car. The original Shelby GT350 Mustang was introduced in 1965 and 2015 will mark the 50th anniversary of the nameplate.
Inside the bonnet of the Shelby beats the heart of thoroughbred muscle car, a 5.2 litre V8. Churning out more than 500bhp, this powerplant is the most powerful naturally aspirated engine that ford has ever made all thanks to clever engineering. The V8 also produces 542Nm of torque which is what a true muscle car should.
Talking on the results of the hard work from Ford, Jamal Hameedi, Chief Engineer of Ford Global Performance Vehicles felt that they were left with “one [engine] that takes true advantage of the new chassis dynamics of the Mustang platform…”
Ford says that they haven’t just done what they traditionally do; use the same suspension from 1964 and just up the ante with the engine. This time Ford has gone through the trouble of beefing up the suspension too.
With a desire to build the “best possible Mustang” Raj Nair, Ford group Vice President, Global Product Development said “Every change we made to this car was driven by the functional requirements of a powerful, responsive powerplant – nimble, precise handling and massive stopping power.”
The continuously controlled Magne Ride dampers are filled with hydraulic fluid and iron particles which stiffen the suspension when an electrical current is passed through them as the car adjusts to different conditions on the road. Even the 19-inch wheels are made of a stiffer compound of aluminium alloys wrapped with Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires. The wheels are specially developed for the GT350 which are .5 inch wider at the back. All of this just to help the Mustang get around corners better than any other muscle car in history.
Adopting more techniques to lighten the weight of the car, like the aluminium or “aluminum” bonnet or “hood”, even the aero has been improved to make this car go as fast as it possible can. After 50 years of development, Ford now have probably got the recipe right for a full blown thoroughbred. A true homage to the great Late Carol Shelby.
