In a move that is the very first in the automotive sector in India, Skoda Auto India will be unveiling its all new Kylaq via a motion picture driven and delivered by ace director Rohit Shetty. The Škoda Kylaq will also be the first car ever to be making its world premiere on an over-the-top (OTT) platform via Jio Cinema.
Petr Janeba, Brand Director, Skoda Auto India says, “Films are one of the many things that are common culture in India and the Czech Republic. And in India, movies are very nearly a way of life and part of every Indian’s fibre. Like we have said earlier, the Kylaq was conceived and designed for the people of India. The Kylaq was also named by the people of India. It is the beginning of a New Era for us here. It is an SUV that will democratise European technology on Indian roads. So it was imperative that when the Kylaq makes its first appearance, all of India shares the experience with us. We thought there was no one better than Rohit Shetty who has a knack for making larger-than-life magnum opuses. Because for us and our customers, the Skoda Kylaq will be no less than a larger-than-life magnum opus.”
Named by India
With the announcement of its intent to introduce an under 4m SUV in the Indian market, Skoda Auto India also actioned a unique and nation-wide naming campaign where it asked the people of India for names for this SUV. In effect, the Skoda Kylaq has been named by India. The name is derived from the Sanskrit term for a crystal and is named after Mount Kailash. The larger Kushaq in Skoda Auto India’s SUV line up also gets its name from the Sanskrit word for an emperor. The Kylaq will add to the company’s roster of SUVs like Kodiaq, the 7-seater4x4, and the mid-sized Kushaq.
Kylaq to drive Skoda Auto India’s New Era
The company first announced its plans to introduce an all-new under 4m SUV in length in February 2024. With this SUV, Skoda Auto India made clear its intentions to enter newer markets and regions in India and bring new customers into the Skoda family. The company will also be expanding its touchpoints to 350 by 2025 to cater to newer markets, newer customers and newer regions the Kylaq will enter.
Driving growth, driving the future
Skoda Auto had its biggest year in terms of sales in India in 2022. Combined with the year 2023, the company sold over 100,000 cars in a 2-year period. Earlier, it had taken the company six years to achieve the landmark, highlighting the rapid pace of growth undertaken by the company ever since the MQB-A0-IN platform has been put into action. With the Kylaq, Skoda Auto will significantly increase its addressable market share in India.
