New Hyundai i20 is bigger with more features at Rs 6.80 lakh onward

Exterior

The new i20 is 10mm longer than the Elite i20 at 3995mm, is 41mm wider at 1775mm and has a similar height at 1505mm. The wheelbase too has marginally increased by 10mm at 2580mm.

This two tone coloured car looks stunning with a very sporty element to its design. In front you have the parametric jewel pattern grille, LED headlamps and LED DRLs, besides projector fog headlamps. Sleek and sporty is what the front is all about. The i20 branding on the LED head lamps and tail lamps gives the impression of enhanced style.

This i20 branding is also there on the side sill. The side profile is accentuated by the fly back chrome belt line, and the large DLO area. DLO stands for Daylight Opening which actually defines the window area. Along with the quarter glass, it gives an impression of an airy cabin from both inside and outside. The car also has a shark fin antenna.

The new i20 comes with R16 diamond cut alloy wheels. As you move to the rear you see the Z shaped LED tail lamps. The rear seems wider because of the tail lamp integrated connecting chrome garnish.

Interior

The cabin has an ambient light. The dashboard gets a very sleek design and the horizontal design pattern gives the cabin a wide feel. The cushioned seats come with leatherette upholstery.

Because of a slightly wider dimension, the new i20 gets 88mm more leg room at the rear at 938mm which the company claims is the best in class. The shoulder room too has increased by 40mm at 1390mm. Thus, 2^nd row seating is a lot more comfortable now. There is amble thigh support and leg room for the passengers in the cabin. The boot capacity too has gone up by 26 litres at 311 litres.

A few quick words on the technology related features. The digital cluster with TFT multi information display or MID is the best in segment. Another best in segment is the 10.24 inches touch screen infotainment with navigation. It gives you smartphone connectivity, both Android Auto and Apple Carplay. You also get multi device Bluetooth connectivity. Continuing with its best in segment features it also has a Bose 7 speaker system. This includes 4 speakers, two tweeters and one subwoofer, besides the amplifier.

The car now has a wireless charger with a cooling pad. This feature is a first in segment. And keeping in mind the prevailing pandemic conditions, the company is providing an Oxyboost Air purifier with Air Quality Indicator or AQI. This is a first for a car in India. For those who want to stick their head out literally, you also have an electric sunroof. 

The all-new i20 will become the first hatchback in the country to offer BlueLink connected features with 50 connected features including 1^st in segment Over The Air or OTA map updates, besides wake up/ voice command.

Engine and Transmission

The new Hyundai i20 will come with three engine options. Like its several family members, this i20 also gets the 1 litre turbo GDI engine that delivers 120ps. It comes with an option of 7DCT and a 6 speed intelligent manual transmission or iMT. Then there is the 1.2 litre Kappa petrol engine which again has a choice of an IVT automatic transmission and a 5 speed Manual Transmission. Power produced is around 83ps. For diesel lovers you get the 1.5 litre engine with only an option of a 6 speed manual transmission.

As for its safety features, this vehicle built on the light weight K-platform, has a strong body structure comprising 66 per cent advanced high strength steel and high strength steel. You get six air bags, a best in segment, vehicle stability management or VSM, electronic stability control or ESC, Hill Assist Control which is a first in segment and rear parking camera with dynamic guide lines and rear sensor display.
