Hyundai recently launched their new 2017
Xcent facelift ahead of the launch of Maruti's 2017 Dzire compact sedan. Over
the years there has been no question that Maruti has more numbers in this
segment than the next five contenders combined. In FY17 Hyundai sold 47,614
units of the Xcent while Maruti Suzuki sold 1,99,878 units of the Dzire. The
Indian auto giant is going to launch the new 3rd generation Dzire on May 16,
2017. Does it have enough to keep the crown or does the Hyundai Xcent get more?

When comparing the dimensions of new Maruti
Dzire and the new facelifted Hyundai Xcent, we find the both vehicles have the
same length and almost the same height. Maruti has increased the width of the
new 2017 Dzire by 40mm thus catering to more shoulder room for the occupants in
the cabin. The new 2017 Maruti Suzuki Dzire is 75mm wider than the 2017 Hyundai
Xcent. The new Dzire gets 30mm more shoulder room for the rear seat occupants
and 20mm more shoulder room for the front seat occupants than the previous
version.
While the new Hyundai Xcent gets a
wheelbase of 2425mm, Maruti has incorporated a longer wheelbase on the Dzire
which now has a wheelbase of 2450mm as opposed to the old wheelbase of 2430mm.
This essentially means that the new Dzire has more cabin space than the Xcent,
so occupants can stretch out just a tad bit more. Maruti has also increased the
boot space of the new Dzire which goes up from 316 litres to 376 litres, this
however is still less when compared to the 407 litres on offer in the new 2017
Hyundai Xcent.

The new 2017 Maruti Dzire will be powered
by the same engine options available on the outgoing model. The new Hyundai
Xcent on the other hand gets a new 1.2L CRDi diesel engine. While the new 2017
Maruti Dzire and the new Hyundai Xcent have the same engine capacity for their
respective petrol variants the Dzire gets slightly more power than the Hyundai
Xcent, to be exact a minuscule 2bhp. Peak power comes in at 6000rpm for both
engines. In terms of Torque the Dzire again has a miniscule 2Nm more than the
Xcent peaking at 4000rpm for both engines. The Dzire however is a tad more fuel
efficient than the new Xcent. While the Xcent returns 15-16kmpl the Dzire
returns almost 19-20kmpl.
The diesel variant of the Dzire is a bigger
engine when compared to the Xcent, it also has one additional cylinder. However,
power and torque figures remain the same for both engines, the only major
difference is the fuel efficiency figures where in the diesel version of the
Dzire returns 25-26kmpl and the diesel 1.2L Xcent returns 20-21kmpl.
Where the new 2017 Dzire wins fairly over
the Hyundai Xcent is the fact that it gets a 5-speed AGS automatic transmission
for both the diesel as well as the petrol models, the Hyundai Xcent only gets a
4-speed unit for the petrol variant. Another factor to be considered is the new
1.2L diesel unit on the Xcent is smaller than the 1.3L unit on the Dzire and is
a 3 cylinder engine while the 1.3L DDiS on the Dzire is a 4 cylinder. Thus the
DDiS engine will be slightly smoother.

While both vehicles clearly come packed
with a lot of features, there are a few hits and misses on both sides. First up
is the Hyundai Xcent which misses out on contemporary features such as projector
headlamps and rear LED light guides which are available on the new 2017 Dzire. Hyundai
has included certain innovative features on the new 2017 Xcent like the 'Smart
Phone Holder with Charging Point' which is a miss on Maruti's new 2017 Dzire. While
the Dzire does not get a cooled glove box, the new Hyundai Xcent misses on
important features like automatic headlamps which have been included on the new
2017 Maruti Suzuki Dzire. Hyundai's new Xcent also misses out on some important
safety aspects which have been incorporated on the new Maruti Suzuki Dzire.
Features like ABS, EBD, airbags and ISOFIX mounts have been made standard
across all variants of the new 2017 Maruti Suzuki Dzire, this however is not
the case with the new Hyundai Xcent which only has airbags as standard fitment
across all variants.
2017 MARUTI SUZUKI DZIRE VS. 2017 HYUNDAI XCENT - THE VERDICT
While Hyundai has merely spiced up the new
Xcent in the form of a facelift, it still gets quite a few premium features and
additions to make it more appealing to consumers. Maruti on the other hand has
showcased the 3rd generation Dzire which brings a fresh and more premium appeal
to the table. It also gets many new safety features as standard which even
Hyundai is not offering. Maruti is also offering slightly more powerful engines
with a better fuel efficiency. We feel the overall package of the new 2017
Dzire is better than the new Hyundai Xcent. What remains to be seen is the
price, while Hyundai has launched the new Dzire for a price tag of Rs. 5.38
lakh (ex-showroom Delhi), we have a feeling the 2017 Maruti Dzire may under cut
this.
