From the dawn of civilisation, no tyrant has been able to suppress
the spirit of freedom. Mankind has evolved over time, breaking the bonds which
shackled him to the very earth that was meant for him to rove. Many a tyrant
has emerged and eventually been brought down but in today's age and date we
face a more complicated problem. Our shackles are no more made of iron and
steel but rather the responsibilities which bring us down to a mere existence.
Sometimes it becomes essential to set your spirit free and that feeling of
liberty is what I felt, when I set out into the horizon on the Indian Scout
Sixty.
When you set out on an open expanse of highway and venture into the
unknown, there are no frills and fancies; moreover it’s a sense of anticipation
which takes a hold of you. The Scout Sixty is just on those lines. It is not a
ride meant for the faint of heart but rather a weapon to unleash the rover
within. Every fleeting breath you draw while on this motorcycle is a step
closer to embracing the freedom which has long eluded us. The Scout Sixty gets
a 999cc, liquid cooled, V Twin engine which makes 78 horses and 88.8Nm of
torque. Peak power comes in at 7300rpm while the peak torque is achieved at
5800rpm. The engine has been mated to a 5-Speed transmission with a tall
gearing setup. The bike gets going at the slightest of throttle inputs and is
smooth in its acceleration.
The Indian Scout Sixty in my opinion is one of the finest motorcycles
I have ridden thus far and that is simply because it is not intimidating in
least. You can cruise the highways in a very laid back manner and thoroughly
enjoy the ride. If you want power, that too is available on demand. The rider
gets a seat height set at 643mm, while the bikes foot pegs and handlebars that
have been designed to maintain a very ergonomic balance of comfort and
convenience. The engine is extremely linear and gets going with ease, this bike
is also light and not bulky like its siblings, weighing in at just 254kgs
(Kerb). All these elements cater to a very well balanced and nimble ride.
The suspension setup on the Scout Sixty is a telescopic fork in the
front and a dual shock in the rear. The bike rides well over the beaten path
and smoothly over tarmac. The 76mm of travel in the rear suspension ensures
rider comfort and the ability to explore and go beyond, where roads end. The
bike gets a ground clearance of 135mm which is decent and clears big potholes
and breakers with ease. The bike rides on broad 130/90 R16 tyres in the front
and 150/80 R16 tyres in the rear. The Scout Sixty gets immense grip thanks to
the tyres and riders can achieve a good lean angle while hugging a corner.
While in city traffic the turning radius does feel a bit disconcerting, on
highways riding this cruiser is a breeze. Indian has also packed adequate
stopping power on this motorcycle with a single disc in the front and rear. The
bike gets 298mm disc with a two pot caliper in the rear and a 298mm disc in the
rear with a single pot caliper.
Apart from fine engineering, the bike also has been skillfully
crafted and in terms of its design and styling looks like a stallion on
steroids. The fat tyres look right at home under the beefy fenders, while the
bike gets just the right amount of bling. The switch gear is of excellent
quality and the bike also gets a host of handy features. The overall fit and
finish is good with a lot of emphasis given to the detailing of this motorcycle.
The Indian Scout Sixty is available for an ex-showroom New Delhi price of Rs.
11.99 lakh which seems to be decent considering the quality and capability of
the motorcycle. This hunk of a cruiser motorcycle does have enough to set you
forth on a journey filled with great memories and truly liberate your soul from
the shackles of tyranny we face in our daily lives.
