At the 77th edition of the Internazionale Ciclo Motociclo e Accessori (EICMA 2019) in Milan, Italy, BMW Motorrad showcased its entire range of 2020 motorcycles, along with a concept motorcycle. But what stood out in the Harley-Davidson stand were the BMW F 900 XR, the BMW F 900R and the Concept R 18 /2 Custom Cruiser.
BMW F 900 XR: The acronym "XR" does not lie. The new 900 is the second component belonging to the BMW Adventure Sports family. Based on the new twin-cylinder platform shared with the “R” model, the BMW F 900 XR features a dynamic yet comfortable riding. This new steed is equipped with 270° twin-cylinder inline 895 cc engine capable of 105 hp and 92 Nm maximum torque. It comes with unique high specification from a technical point of view, such as adaptive cornering light, connectivity features and various Riding Modes. It will be also available in a 48cc version suitable for beginners with A2 driving license.
BMW F 900 R: The BMW F 900 R has been completely redesign from the ground up. As a matter of fact BMW technicians revamped not only the GS range but also its F 900R mid-sized naked, in order to obtain the perfect dynamic balance between performance and lightness. Compared to that of the GS, the engine of the F 900R increases in displacement up to 895 cc and capable of 105 hp while it continues to adopt the usual layout. The frame is a first. The suspensions are new and the possibility of adopting (only at the rear) the ESA semi-active suspension system is confirmed. The F 900 R is equipped with two Riding Modes while the “Pro" Riding Modes are offered as optional. This machine will be also available in a new 35 kW version, suitable for riders with an A2 driver's license.
Concept R 18 /2 Custom Cruiser: The BMW Motorrad Concept R 18 – a purist, historically inspired version of the big boxer – was presented by the BMW Group at the Concorso d'Eleganza in the Villa d'Este at Lake Como in the early summer. Six months later, at EICMA the company presented its second sensational concept bike based on a big boxer engine: the BMW Motorrad Concept R 18 /2 (pronounced: “Slash Two”). It is the stylistic opposite of the Concept R 18: a modern, dynamic custom cruiser with a performance appeal that is somewhat rougher round the edges.
New BMW S 1000 XR: The new BMW S 1000 RR saw its world premiere at the EICMA 2019. The new edition of the best-selling Adventure Sport bike is radically lighter and more agile, as well as achieving an unprecedented combination of long-distance performance and sports capabilities. With a completely newly developed engine and suspension and a DIN unladen weight of 226 kg – 10 kg less than its predecessor when adjusted for equipment – the S 1000 XR opens up a whole new dimension in the Adventure Sport segment. The new S 1000 XR advances the sports to touring range in its own distinctive new way, leaving nothing to be desired – not least because it has the following standard features on board: Dynamic ESA, riding modes Pro, ABS Pro & DTC, Hill Start Control Pro, a perfectly readable 6.5” TFT screen complete with connectivity and full LED lighting. Newly developed engine weighing 5 kg less and based on the S 1000 RR, with adapted gear ratios, further increased mid-range power and engine drag torque control (MSR). The newly developed in-line 4-cylinder engine is based on the S 1000 RR engine and delivers an output of 165 hp at 11,000 rpm. The maximum torque of 114 Nm is available at 9,250 rpm.
