Since July 2012 when a
voluntary code on vehicle recall came into effect in India, more than 1 million
vehicles have been recalled by various vehicle manufacturers across the
country. The recalls include those from Ford India, Toyota Kirloskar, Honda Motorcycle
& Scooter India, Hyundai Motor India, Mahindra & Mahindra, Maruti
Suzuki India, Nissan India, Renault India, Honda Cars India, India Yamaha
Motor, Audi India, Jaguar Land Rover, General Motors India, Harley Davidson and
Volkswagen India.
This information came from
Minister of State in the Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprisesi
G.M. Siddeshwara in a written reply in Lok Sabha on December 8, 2015.
At present there is no recall
policy in the country. The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways has
initiated steps for bringing mandatory Recall Policy. A holistic approach is
proposed in the upcoming draft Road Transport and Safety Bill 2014, the latest
version of which is also hosted on the website of Ministry of Road Transport
& Highways, the Minister stated..
The industry has announced a voluntary code on
vehicle recall in July 2012. Since July 2012, whenever a safety defect which
poses risk of accident or harm to the vehicle occupant is recognised in
vehicles, the manufacturers conduct a voluntary recall and offer to rectify the
vehicles free of charge. There is an
increased awareness and initiatives among the vehicle manufacturers to perform
recalls when necessary. Since the initiative taken by Indian industry, more
than 1 million vehicles have been recalled, the Minister stated. The list of
