Veteran automotive industrialist Dr. Surinder Kapur, Founder and Chairman, Sona Group passed away after a brief illness in Munich, Germany at 20.00 hrs (IST) on June 30, 2015. He is survived by his wife Rani Kapur and children Sunjay Kapur, Suparna Motwane and Mandira Koirala. This was stated in a press statement issued by the Sona Group. The Sona Group consists of the flagship company Sona Koyo Steering, a leading supplier of steering columns to Maruti Suzuki.
“Dr. Kapur was revered as a noted industrialist and a pioneer in the Indian Auto industry. He has held various positions of responsibility in key industry bodies.
"He has served as the Chairman of the Industrial Relations Council of Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and was awarded the CII President’s Award for contribution to Mission for ‘Innovation in Manufacturing for the year 2006-2007’. Dr. Kapur was a member of the National Manufacturing Competitiveness Council (NMCC) and National Council for Electric Mobility (NCEM). He was also a member of Automotive Mission Plan (2006-2016) set up by Ministry of Heavy Industry, Government of India and has led the CII’s mission on Innovation in Manufacturing. He has been a past President of the Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India (ACMA) as well as Chairman of TPM Club of India,” the press statement read.
