Maruti Suzuki India Limited set a new milestone by becoming
the only car manufacturer in India to roll out its 15 millionth car. The 15
millionth car, a DZire VDi (Chassis No. MA3FJEB1S00740865) rolled out from the
company’s Manesar facility.
While the first five millionth milestone was reached in
April 2005, (it took the company around 22 years to reach this!) the last five
million (from 10 million to 15 million) only about four years. Now the company
wants to hurry even further with its next five million, taking its cumulative
production to 20 million units.
The first car, a Maruti 800, had rolled out from the Gurgaon
facility in December 1983. The Company has achieved this milestone in 31 years
and 5 months.
Dedicating the milestone to the Company’s customers,
partners and employees, Rajiv Gandhi, Executive Director, Production, Maruti
Suzuki India Limited said, “Maruti Suzuki’s journey has been one of Kaizen and
continuous improvement. Our people on the shop floor make enormous contribution
so that we can offer more and better to our customers, and fulfil their needs
and aspirations”.
He added: “Of course, we want to get to 20 million in good
time, by making quality products with the help of capable and motivated
people”.
The Company’s medium term goal is to clock sales of 2
million vehicles per annum by 2020. It is expanding its product portfolio,
foraying into new segments, strengthening the sales and service network and
enhancing capabilities across the value chain.
Models that significantly contributed to this journey
include Maruti 800, Brand Alto, Wagon R, Omni and new models such as Swift and
DZire.
