Industrialist
Cyrus Mistry, 54 years old and former chairman of Tata Sons, was killed in a
road accident when he was travelling from Ahmedabad to Mumbai in a Mercedes
car, according to official reports. He was killed in a car accident in
Maharashtra's Palghar.

Mistry was married to Rohiqa Chagla. The couple has two sons, Firoz Mistry and
Zahan Mistry. He was an Irish citizen and a permanent resident of India (he had
acquired Overseas Citizenship of India status).

Mistry had succeeded Ratan Tata as chairman of the Tata Sons but a few years
later in October 2016 was unceremoniously ousted in a boardroom coup. He had
taken over as the chairman in December 2012 after Ratan Tata announced his
retirement.

"The
accident took place around 3.15 pm, when Mistry was travelling to Mumbai from Ahmedabad.
The accident took place on a bridge over the Surya river. It seems an
accident," said Palghar district superintendent of police, Balasaheb
Patil.
The
mangled remains of the silver Mercedes car in which Mistry was travelling were
seen at the accident site. The accident happened when the car hit the road
divider at Charoti area of Palghar, 135 km from Mumbai, according to senior police
officials. Tow other persons travelling with Mistry including his driver were
injured. They were taken to a hospital in Gujarat.
Mr
Mistry, who was the sixth chairman of Tata Sons, was ousted from the position
in October 2016. He had taken over as the chairman in December 2012 after Ratan
Tata announced his retirement.
It
was in the 1930s that Mistry's grandfather, Shapoorji Mistry, first acquired a
stake in Tata Sons, according to information available on the net. The stake now
stands at 18.5%, and it comprises the largest block of shares held by a single
party.
