Both
production and sales have taken a hit in the Indian auto industry for the month
of May 2019. The downhill drive continues for the industry, according to the
latest sales and production data shared by the Society of Indian Automobile
Manufacturers (SIAM).
In
the month of May, the total sales of passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles,
three wheelers and two wheelers recorded a -8.62 per cent of negative growth in
domestic sales (2086358 units sold in domestic market in May 2019 as compared
to 2,283,262 units sold in May 2018).
The
degrowth or negative growth recorded in the passenger vehicles industry at -20.55
per cent (239,347 units in May 2019 as compared to 301,238 units in May 2018).

In
the commercial vehicles segment, the drop in May sales stood at -10.02 per
cent. A total of 68,847 units of commercial vehicles were sold in May 2019 as compared
to 76,517 units 9n the corresponding period last month.

The
two wheeler segment saw a degrowth of -6.73 per cent in domestic sales in May
2019 (1726206 units sold in May 2019 as compared to 1850698 units sold in May
2018. Sale of scooters dipped - 7.87 per
cent (511,724 units in May 2019 as compared to 555467 units in May 2018). Sales
of motorcycles fell -4.89 units (1162373 units in May 2019 as compared to
1222164 units in May 2018), while moped sales fell -28.68per cent (52109 units
in May 2019 as compared to 73,067 units in May 2018).
According
to SIAM, the auto industry produced a total 4,879,375 vehicles including
Passenger Vehicles, Commercial Vehicles, Three Wheelers, Two Wheelers and
Quadricycle in April-May 2019 as against 5,380,019 in April-May 2018,
registering a de-growth (-) 9.31 percent over the same period last year.
Domestic Sales
The
sale of Passenger Vehicles declined by (-)18.82 percent in April-May 2019 over
the same period last year. Within the Passenger Vehicles, the sales for
Passenger Cars, Utility Vehicle & Vans declined by (-) 22.98 percent, (-)
6.15 percent and (-) 28.57 percent respectively in April-May 2019 over the same
period last year.
The
overall Commercial Vehicles segment registered a decline of (-) 8.05 percent in
April-May 2019 as compared to the same period last year. Medium & Heavy
Commercial Vehicles (M&HCVs) declined by (-) 16.72 percent and Light
Commercial Vehicles declined by (-) 2.44 percent in April-May 2019 over the
same period last year.
Three
Wheelers sales declined by (-) 6.56 percent in April-May 2019 over the same
period last year. Within the Three Wheelers, Passenger Carrier sales registered
a de-growth of (-) 7.55 percent and Goods Carrier declined by (-) 2.53 percent
in April-May 2019 over April-May 2018.
Two
Wheelers sales registered a de-growth of (-) 11.68 percent in April-May 2019
over April-May 2018. Within the Two Wheelers segment, Scooters, Motorcycles and
Mopeds declined by (-) 17.67 percent, (-) 8.36 percent and (-) 17.72 percent
respectively in April-May 2019 over April-May 2018.
Exports
In
April-May 2019, overall automobile exports declined by (-) 0.27 percent. While
Passenger Vehicles and Two Wheelers exports grew by 5.24 percent and 1.65
percent respectively and Commercial Vehicles and Three Wheelers registered a
de-growth of (-) 55.01 percent, and (-) 10.91 percent respectively in April-May
2019 over the same period last year.
