One of the country's most trusted car brands Maruti Suzuki has achieved a unique milestone by selling a cumulative 35 lakh units of their entry level hatchback - Alto. The company has been able to achieve a stable growth rate 6pc and a dominant market share of 33pc in 2017-18. The Alto hatchback has been the best-selling car in India for the last 14 years consecutively.
R S Kalsi, Senior Executive Director (Marketing & Sales), Maruti Suzuki, said, “Brand Alto continues to remain fresh, relevant and as exciting as it was in 2000. Since 2006, every two years, Alto is adding 5 lakh new happy customers. In 2008, we clocked 10 lakh units. In 2010, it touched 15 lakh units and today in 2018, we have crossed 35 lakhs of cumulative sales.”
The Alto brand has been the choice for most first time customers and this according to the company is thanks to its modern design, affordability and high fuel efficiency. The company has also consistently introduced new designs and has regularly upgraded technology on the Alto. In the year 2017-18 almost 55pc of customers selected the Alto as their first car and nearly 25pc customers buy the Alto as an additional car.
The hatchback is also known to have democratised features like power steering, front power windows, integrated stereo, internally adjustable ORVMs among other fitment. The Alto is available with two engine options 0.8L and 1.0L petrol power plants. The Maruti Suzuki Alto is also offered with a CNG variant. The company introduced two pedal technology on the Alto in 2014, in the form of the Alto K10 AGS (Auto Gear Shift). At present 18pc of the total Alto sales comes in the form of the Alto K10 AGS.
According to company statistics nearly 44pc of Alto sales comes from customers under the age of 35years. This contribution has grow by nearly 4pc in the last 3 years.
